Benguela – The Lwini Foundation’s aid raising campaign in favour of the people of Somali currently faced with a severe drought and 750,000 people threatened with death by the end of this year due to hunger started Tuesday in central Benguela province, Angop learned.

Called “Be in Solidarity”, the campaign is intended to raise aid for the Somali people faced with a severe food crisis.

According to the campaign coordinator, Esmeralda da Cruz Neto, people who feel solidarity with the population of that country, due to prolonged drought and long lasting war, are invited to hand out such goods as food, clothes and others.

Esmeralda da Cruz Neto said containers have been made available to store the goods raised, adding that other places are being created for people to participate in the philanthropic ninitiative to assist the people of that north of African country.

The source said that in order for the initiative to be successful, the organisation is seeking the cooperation of other institutions and segments of the Angolan society in Benguela, particularly the churches.

On the other hand, the Angolan Government, through the Foreign Ministry, is engaged in a wide campaign of goods and money raising to assist the Somali people.

This is partly in response to a decision from the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) summit held recently in Luanda to assist the population of Somalia facing a severe famine.

The United Nations has said the control of the food crisis in Somalia caused by a severe drought and a long lasting conflict hitting 13 million people, requires the international community aid.
